Eamon finds a career he loves

Eamon is a young person with a Samoan background who emigrated from New Zealand in his early teens. At 17 years of age he approached DBCYP and the Get Set for Work team for assistance with creating some direction for his life. He said that he felt ‘confused’ and was willing to accept ‘any work’ as he needed money to support himself. Not only did the team from Get Set for Work find Eamon a job, they also assisted Eamon to find a job that he loved!

Eamon said that the team ask him many questions about his interests and goals in life and that from this discussion Eamon expressed his love of cutting hair. Eamon had been experimenting with modern creative cuts on his friends. It was not long before Eamon commenced an apprenticeship at a local Barber shop. Eamon is pleased that Get Set for Work for encouraged him to follow his passion of hair cutting rather than just assisting him to find any work that was available. Eamon states ‘they focused on what I wanted to do and then worked around that’. He also said that he found the staff to be ‘easy to talk to’ and ‘friendly’. His family is also very proud of his achievements. Eamon is currently saving to go back to New Zealand for 3 months to complete a traditional barber rather than hairdressing apprenticeship. Eamon said ‘I love cutting hair and Get Set for Work helped me to follow that dream. Cutting hair is all I want to do in life now. It is going to be my career for life.’
